The first of many adventures to be chronicled in the Ruby series is out now, beginning with a very rainy day when she decided she would build. The idea for this book came about when I was working with my best friend James Waldron (the illustrator) at a restaurant in downtown Phoenix. We had already spent a lot of time playing music together and would pass time at work concocting crazy creative ideas. Sometimes they were about music, sometimes they were stories or artwork. Our friends (and owners of the restaurant) Ed and Christine McHale had a daughter named Ruby. One evening after dinner at their house, Ruby showed James and I something amazing she had built. Ed and Christine had already been encouraging us to put our creativity into a children’s book with music, but we were stuck on the subject. Then Ruby saved us with her imagination.

Ruby’s Rainy Day is printed locally on cotton paper by Rob Craer at Impact Printing. The binding is sewn by my mother, Kathleen, using my great-grandmother Laila’s pedal sewing machine. The song is recorded locally at Mulberry Studios and mastered by Josh Foster at ManDef Mastering.
